I took this picture from the "escalator", which is exactly that. It runs open air from central to midlevels on the Hong Kong side. It runs "down" in the morning and up in the evening. I used to take it every morning to go to work. Without it , people couldn't get the 10 vertical blocks to the subway.
Another way of commuting from the Kowloon side to central is by ferry. The star ferry doubles as the best way to see the skyline. At HK$2.40 or 30 cents US, its a deal that can't be beat.
