I have a week in the UK and am just getting used to having a fridge full of food and sleeping in my own bed. Next week I'll be in Frankfurt attending the Frankfurt bookfair. The Bookfair is one of those strange things that has grown over the years to take on a life of its own. People in publishing use it as a barometer , marking time on their career.
"How many Franfurts has it been for you?"
Those sorts of questions.
I'm on my 13th.......
Every written word in every language is at the bookfair. New media (though its not really new anymore), also figures prominently. Think of 50 football fields of exhibits and you'll get a sensee of the scale. It is the biggest commercial fair in the world.
Why its held in Frankfurt is lost in the mists of time.
I see it as an interesting chance to see what people are doing. Not what they're publishing , though that's good too, but where they are working. Frankfurt is the place where people turn up in new jobs or get recruited for new ones, or get fired from their old ones......
That's it for today.
Hope all is well with you wherever you are
