I've finished what's felt like a long week and head home soon. My time in Sydney has not been without its lighter moments as the picture with work colleagues above attests, but I'm ready to head back to the rain and cold.I've noticed an odd fashion trend here about which my female visitors may be able to enlighten me.
Many of the women here wear dresses with extremely high waistlines.
I'm talking right under the bust.
Its a sort of maternity wear chic for the un-pregnant. If someone is of a certain girth they appear pregnant, but are unlikely to be so given the copious double gin and tonics being consumed. Have I missed the logic of this fashion trend?
Not criticising exactly, just puzzled.
I think it looks odd but then again I'm just a guy and have never really understood these things.

I spent much of the week at the convention center in Darling Harbour. This area is the redeveloped docklands and used to be a nasty, dangerous part of town. Now its got a "Disney-Singapore" air of unreality. Its quite squeaky clean and has a contrived vibe. It also has the biggest TV I've ever seen which shows an unending stream of sports. These guys LOVE their sport.

The one thing undeniable about this city is that there is pretty much a killer view everywhere you look. I had dinner on Tuesday night at Circular Quay in the Park Hyatt hotel. The view out the window was pretty nice as you can see.
The food and wine were great. The problem lay in the fact that there were cockroaches the size of your thumb scuttling around under the table. It kind of takes away from the precious presentation and haughty service when bugs are crawling up the back of your chair. Finally, a bit of unhappy news.
I got word that an old friend died suddenly leaving behind 4 kids. I won't invade his family's privacy by posting his name, but I wanted to acknowledge this sad event.
You never know what may happen tomorrow so enjoy today.
I hope all is well wherever you are and you're making the best of the here and now.

Sorry to hear about your friend, no matter who, when, where or how it is always difficult.
On the fashion front, I must admit to being a little baffled too; if it doesn't look good DONT GO THERE. There is never any excuse for looking pregnant if you aren't - and maternity clothes these days are no longer the floaty smock type disasters. The waistband under the bust is supposed to accentuate those best loved assets and hide the rest (all a little Pride & Predjudice for me, however there is a little black dress I have.....)
ps. Spring has hit Blighty - 14 degrees, blue skies and sunshine even Up North.
I think there is a bit of mass delusion going on here. Its like most fashion models being completely unattractive to men but obviously hired because they have some sort of odd attraction to women. The high waist thing looks crap...there I've said it...it does. I think that Aussies are a bit nuts. The whole place is a bit chav and essex come to think of it. Kind of like a hot canada in the 1950's..... with disposable income. I guess I'm going to get reamed for that comment, but no matter I'm outta here!
thanks for the comment Sarah. Its clear that no one else is remotely interested
Yes, the empire waist is fashionable at the moment. That style comes in and out all the time, usually paired with some bohemian revival which is also big at the moment.
The problem you've observed is a real one. Trendoids don't realize that you shouldn't wear something just because its trendy. Not every trend is suits every body type. Empire waists should only be worn by thin, less endowed woman. Busty girls always look preggers in that style. That's why you'll never catch me in an empire waist. . .unless I'm preggers
Safe flight home!
I am interested in that firstly you put on a very unflattering picture of a woman - and then go on about people looking crap. You want comments you got one.
roaches in a hotel dining area... not good.
Well comments I got anonymous of course!
There's no woman hating thing going on here, so chill on that regard.
The fashion looks odd, that's all.
The pic of the woman on the beach is a REAL picture, not some postcard of a beach babe.
I thought you'd be more excised over the chav comment, but it appears you're more worried about some personal agenda
T-
How odd is that - even "down under" there are slaves to fashion. Very brave of you to speak out on the fact that it is not a flattering style for most - glad you didn't fall into the "emperor's new clothes" mentality. Of course, I'd expect nothing less of you than being a man who knows his mind. Dear, dear Anonymous - relax, if you have come to know our "T" at all you know that he'd never make a statement about the fashion to be mean and/or petty. Just an honest observation. And- T so sorry to hear of your loss! Times like that bring all the important things in life back to front and center don't they? Well, I've rambled long enough. Safe travels!
Always - KC
