Laughing in hell

An article in the Times today brought a smile and highlighted the ways people deal with the utter shit they can find themselves in.
Jokes and humour have, through the ages, been used by populations under the boot of despots and tyrants to register a personal protest.
There's no sound more terrifying to a tyrant than a collective snigger.
Here are a couple of jokes making the rounds in Zimbabwe:
What did Zimbabweans do for light before candles?
Electricity
A policeman stops a motorist and asks for a donation: terrorists have kidnapped Mugabe and vowed to soak him in petrol and set him alight if a ransom isn't paid.
"How much are other people giving?" the motorist asks.
"On average two-three litres"
For more jokes from Zimbabwe go here.
Have a great weekend.

I went to Zimbabwe 20 years ago: things were pretty desperate then, I dread to think how dire they are now. Grim. Perhaps with the media coverage of the "elections" Mbeki will make a move to stop Bob giving the finger to the nation, in all senses.

The biggest joke I've heard was from an expert on BBC World Service pointing out the futility of applying sanctions against Zimbabwe in the wake of Mugabe's "re-election" because you cant sanction a nation that has no means to buy anything. How screwed do you have to be to not qualify for sanctions ? As screwed as Zimbabwe I guess. Makes you feel pretty good about where I get to live. On that note, Happy Canada Day !!

Probably working his plums off. If he's still incommunicado in two days, maybe someone should check he's not out cold on the floor being gnawed by his pneumatic neighbour's cats...
